RoamChime Privacy Policy

No account no server

RoamChime doesn’t ask you to sign up or log in, and it doesn’t have a backend server of its own. Your journeys, the places you’ve passed, and your settings are stored only in a local database on your device. We (the developer) never see this data, because it’s never sent to us.

What the app uses your location for

While a journey is active, RoamChime uses your device’s GPS location to notice when you’ve arrived somewhere new, so it can look up the name of that town or city and announce it. This works with the app in the foreground, backgrounded, or with your screen locked, and stops the moment you end or pause a journey.

How place names are looked up (this involves Google)

To turn GPS coordinates into a place name, RoamChime asks your phone’s own operating system to look it up. On most Android phones, that on-device lookup is itself backed by a request to Google’s geocoding service — so the coordinates for that one lookup are sent to Google over the network, even though RoamChime itself has no server to send them to. Only the coordinates are sent for this purpose; nothing else about you or your device is attached to it. This request is covered by Google’s own privacy policy (policies.google.com/privacy), not this one.

Google Maps

The Visited Map screen displays the places you’ve passed using the Google Maps SDK, which loads map imagery from Google over the network while that screen is open. As with the geocoding lookup above, this is governed by Google’s own privacy policy, not RoamChime’s.

What we don’t do

RoamChime has no advertising, no analytics or tracking software, and no third-party trackers of any kind built in. We don’t sell, rent, or share your data with anyone for marketing, and we don’t build a profile of you, because there’s no server-side account for a profile to live on.

Your control over your data

From Settings → Privacy & Data, you can export your full travel history as a CSV or JSON file (shared through your device’s own share sheet, to wherever you choose — that’s the only time your data leaves your device under your direction), delete all of it immediately, or turn on auto-delete so journeys older than a period you choose (30, 90, or 180 days) are removed automatically.

Permissions the app requests

RoamChime requests location access (including “Allow all the time,” so it can keep working while your screen is off) because that’s the one thing the app fundamentally needs to do its job. It doesn’t request contacts, photos, the microphone, or anything else unrelated to identifying places you pass.

Children

RoamChime isn’t directed at children and isn’t designed to collect information from them.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we’ll update the “last updated” date above and the copy in the app. Since there’s no account or email on file, we can’t notify you directly — checking back here occasionally is the way to stay current.
